Before jumping into this review, I want to say that I think Plexus, as a whole, is an amazing company. From my understanding, they take great care of their ambassadors, encourage a culture of excellence, inclusiveness, and education, and I love the way I see "Plexus people" encouraging one another- they seem to really share in the joy of each other's success. All products aside, as an outsider looking in, I have seen many women grow in confidence and enlarge their circle of friendships as a byproduct of being apart of this company. You can't put a price on that! What you can put a price on is the shocking amount of money stay at home moms, dads with a side hustle, and many other motivated goal diggers from all walks of life are bringing in by slanging Pink drinks and probiotics. We're talking anywhere from several hundred to over $30,000 per MONTH based on "rank." WOWZERS.
Now for the goods. The purpose of this post is to dissect, offer the science, and my own thoughts and personal experience on Plexus's flagship product, SLIM. Let's start with the claims. Plexus and their ambassadors tout the products ability to:
• Help you lose weight
• Promote the growth of good gut microbes
• Balance blood sugar
Does SLIM help you lose weight?
Plexus cites an independent, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical study to back up their claim of weight loss. The study involved 175 participants and the control group drank 1 SLIM packet twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of the 8 week period the control group lost an average of 5.45 pounds, while the placebo group lost an average of 3.12 pounds. In conclusion, after 8 weeks, the people drinking SLIM twice a day lost 2.33 more pounds than the people who took the placebo.
Technically SLIM did encourage more weight loss, but we're talking 2 pounds here. Maybe you're thinking, but I lost a ton of weight drinking SLIM! You very well may have! But correlation doesn't equal causation. I have noticed that often times when people begin taking Plexus products, they are at a point in their life when they are motivated and ready for change. Many, along with beginning Plexus products, also begin working out more often and eating healthier, both activities that are proven methods of weight loss.
Does SLIM promote the growth of good gut microbes?
SLIM contains Xylooligosaccharides (XOS), a prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. This study shows the positive effect XOS has on gut bacteria in both healthy and pre-diabetic adults. And here we find that XOS increases bifidobacteria, a bacteria known to help with bowl irregularity, inflammation in the gut, and carbohydrate metabolism. This is great news! In short, YES! SLIM does promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Is XOS unique to SLIM? No. You can get prebiotic fiber from hundreds of different supplements on the market, or from eating foods like under-ripe bananas, raw asparagus, raw garlic, raw dandelion greens, etc. But let's be real, none of those are as fun and cute as a tasty pink drink. It's definitely an easy and convenient method of getting some prebiotics into your gut if it's in your budget (we will get to that later).
Does SLIM help balance blood sugar?
Yes! SLIM contains Green coffee bean extract which contains a phytochemical called Chlorogenic acts (CGA). CGA has been shown to have a positive effect on glucose metabolism as well as many other systems in the body. SLIM also contains 200 mcg of chromium, a mineral that helps shuttle glucose into cells. Chromium deficiency is rare in healthy individuals, but demands are higher for those with type 2 Diabetes. Also note that if you are taking a multi-vitamin, it will likely contain 100-400 mcg of chromium, which is sufficient for people with blood sugar in a normal range.
My personal experience
I tried SLIM for a total of 21 days drinking a pink drink twice daily, as suggested. You guys, it's delicious and so refreshing. I found myself looking forward to my pink treat, and was honestly bummed when I ran out. Did I lose weight? No, thank goodness because I wasn't trying to. Did I notice any difference in my mood or energy? I think the beautiful hue of pink and refreshing taste did make me happy! I don't necessarily think it had much to do with the ingredients effects, I just like pretty things. But it's important to note that I was already taking, and have been for years, prebiotics, chromium, and all of the ingredients in SLIM apart from the green coffee bean and Garcinia cambogia, so I may not be the best person to review the product.
Is SLIM worth it?
Worth is so subjective, so I can't really answer that for you. For some, supporting a stay at home mom, enjoying the benefits listed above, and maybe even making some money yourself is well worth the investment! For others it may not be. The cost of SLIM if you do NOT subscribe (which would save you 5%) is $87.95 for a bag of 30 SLIM packets. It is recommended, and the study cited for weight loss, to drink 2 packets a day. This totals out to be $175.90 a month.
I'll end here, I hope this was helpful and informative. I would love to hear your experience on SLIM or your thoughts in the comments below. And to all my Plexus sisters out there reading this, know I admire your hustle and love your community.
