I’m not sure about you, but my early 20’s were filled with days that were packed end-to-end with nonstop activities. I never seemed to stop. When I look back on those days, I remember feeling wired, tired, yet unable to truly REST.
Did you know you can become addicted to your own stress hormones? That’s right. Sounds crazy, but those of us who grew up in homes that were unstable in relationships that were unpredictable became accustomed to living with high levels of cortisol and adrenaline coursing through our veins.
This constant state of “fight or flight” can be carried into our adulthood and even when we are free from toxic people and environments, we may pack our schedules, overload on caffeine, and continue to unconsciously search out forms of stress to keep the adrenaline high going because it’s all we know.
BUT this is not sustainable. In fact, it’s a recipe for burnout.

These are just a few signs that your nervous system is on high alert and crying out for REST.
If this is you, it’s time to get off the hamster wheel. You can start by taking just a few minutes a day to be still and breathe. Try a quick meditation from the Headspace or CALM app, or simply take a hot bath with NO phone and no distractions.
Begin acclimating yourself to rest and being okay with being still.
