The Essential Oil craze has probably hit your city just like mine. Sure they smell good, but do they really work?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts distilled into oil. They have been used as holistic medicines in many cultures for centuries. Essential oils are often used to ease stress, boost mood, relieve pain from migraines and headaches, get a good night's sleep, soothe nausea, and even repel insects. Most essential oils have antiseptic properties as well!
The benefits of Essential Oils can be found through aromatherapy, topical application and even ingestion. Aromatherapy is the safest and most common method of utilizing Essential Oils. My favorite method of aromatherapy is diffusing (you can find my all-time favorite diffuser here as well as my go to oil for aromatherapy) When inhaled, molecules in essential oils are believed to influence the nervous system and the limbic area of the brain, as well as hormones, brain chemicals, and even your metabolism.
Oils can also be applied directly to the skin to relieve muscle or sinus pain. It's important to dilute your essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil, jojoba oil or grapeseed oil to prevent burns or irritation. You can find one of my favorite topical oils to improve Liver Function here.
Some essential oils can be used in cooking or even swallowed in small doses as medication, but this should be done with caution. Not all essential oils can be ingested, so it is important to consult your local holistic dietitian or essential oil expert before consuming a specific oil.
So, to answer the question- do essential oils really work? My answer is yes!
Essential oils can be used to treat many physical and emotional health issues. At the molecular level, these oils contain beneficial compounds like antioxidants, terpenes, and esters that may help to boost overall wellness. In addition, Essential oils used in aromatherapy trigger a response in the brain that sends healing to the body. These oils can balance out hormone levels, heal digestive disorders, and dramatically reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
